'Classical' vibrato is applied by moving the fretting hand from side to side along the direction of the string, it is sometimes called 'horizontal' vibrato. Generally it works better on a nylon strung guitar, however, it can be used to good effect on ballads.

Once you have the technique, try experimenting by moving the fretting hand slowly and then more quickly for different types of effect.
